Gort is for me the architypal killer robot from the 1950's sci fi films, gaint cyclopian smooth silver robot, eye beams, unspeaking, It is its simplisty which i find interesting, most characters of the type from this time period are a bit to complicated and over thought, and thus become slightly comical, for example Robbie the Robot, from Forbidden Planet.
I see your point and agree that GORT was such a mennising
ReplyDeletefigure. For me it was not just the fact he was the giant "Frankensteinesq" construction. In truth he was not a monster. Rather he was a highly intelligent and articulate automaton, faithfully dedicated to the protection of his leader, and carring out his programing/duty. GORT represents to me the one being no one can reason with, or appeal to. I think that is what is the truly frightening aspect of his persona. He is in many respects Klaatu's "Mister Hyde".
